The majority of the patients we see request surgery of the labia minora or labiaplasty.

Labiaplasty Plastic Surgery

Labiaplasty is surgery of the labia minora. Hypertrophic or abnormally enlarged labia minora can occur either at the end of adolescence or after having children. This can become troublesome as it causes rubbing during exercise or can become prominent whilst wearing tight clothing. Labiaplasty is an operation performed to remove excess tissue from the labia minora. The operation is designed to minimise scarring and to maximise aesthetic outcomes. Our preference is the butterfly technique. This ensures natural results and optimal healing. At The Swan Clinic your comfort and privacy are paramount. Any photos taken will never be shown to anyone. In addition, we can ensure an all female theatre for your comfort.

Majoroplasty Surgery

This is surgery of the labia majora and can be done to enlarge or reduce this area. For various reasons, this area can be atrophic, causing a shallow labia minora to majora groove. This results in a large and prominent labia minora which can persist after surgery. This area can be augmented with fat grafting to restore labia majora fullness and the natural contour. Conversely, sometimes this area is enlarged and can hang beyond the folds of underwear or swim wear. In this instance, surgery can be used to judiciously trim this area to restore its natural shape and side.

Hoodplasty Surgery

The clitoral hood naturally exists to protect the clitorus from rubbing against clothing. This area usually becomes less prominent when labiaplasty or surgery of the labia minora is performed. In very select cases, this area can be reduced.

Vaginaplasty Surgery

Either during adolesence, childbirth or as we get older, the vaginal walls may occasionally need tightening. Part of this operation is also to reconstruct the muscles that can stretch with time. This operation needs to be performed under general anaesthetic. It involves removing a strip of the vaginal mucosa, repairing the muscles and tightening the vaginal wall. This operation needs to be performed in hospital and may be eligible for a medicare and private health fund rebate.

Labiaplasty Costs and medicare rebate?

For labia minora surgery, labia majora surgery and clitoral hood surgery, medicare rebates are only applicable for severe congenital surgery. Regarding vaginal tightening, there may be a medicare rebate applicable for functional problems. Please contact us for more details.

Labiaplasty back to work recovery

The expected return to work time is 3 days for office work and upto 1 week for jobs requiring physical work. You will need to apply Iced water gauze to the area for 48 hours. Allow 2-4 weeks for swimming, depending on healing. 4-6 weeks for heavy exercise and bedroom activities.

Labiaplasty Frequently Asked Questions:

Why are the labias sometimes long?

It can be congenital and the labias start to grow during adolescence.  Sometimes it becomes more obvious after child birth.

Do long labias affect sexual function?

Not usually. With the correct stimulation and lubrication, the long labias usually do not interfere with sexual function. Surgery does not improve or worsen sexual function physically, although some patients feel they are more confident after surgery.

What is a normal labia?

With the rise of the adult entertainment industry, expectations of what is normal is changing. The barbie doll or coin slot are a very narrow proportion of the population. Most ladies fit into three categories based on the shape of their labias.

The “sting ray”: where the labias are longer at one area: about 50%

The “fan”: where the labias are longer over a wider area: around 30%

The “funnel”: where the labias have a narrowed opening: about 10%

Asymmetry: Some ladies have one labia much longer than the other: about 5%

General tissue excess: about 10% of ladies have general tissue excess. The clitoral hood is enlarged, the labias are enlarged, the clitoris is enlarged and hangs lower. These patients may need more than one operation. This is so that each operation is performed safely and the blood supply is preserved at each step. It is especially important to reduce these ladies carefully to give balance and to avoid over reducing the labia minora and leaving a large clitoris and hood which can lead to the dreaded “mini penis” deformity.

The other way to look at the labia is lying down on the back. Generally speaking, the citorus and hood takes up 1/3 and the rest of the labia minora takes up 2/3.

Each shape requires a different technique to give balance.

 Other things to consider are:

  • What the mons looks like. Is this enlarged and hanging
  • What about the labia majora: labia minora groove. Is this shallow or deep? Childbirth can make the groove more shallow.
  • How strong is the pelvic floor? A strong pelvic floor allows for good continence as well as a cervix that is ideally positioned.

What is normal labial length?

Labial length is variable and we classify them into different grades. Labial length is measured from the vaginal opening

Grade I: less than 2cm

Grade II: 2-4cm

Grade III: 4-8cm

Grade IV: more then 8cm. A Medicare item number is available for patients at this level.

What are the different options?

There are two main techniques for labiaplasty, the wedge technique (or butterfly) or the trim method. The wedge technique offers a more natural result. It retains the glands and normal tissue along the out wedge of the lips. It also avoids placing a scar along the vaginal opening. The surgery is performed so that no one knows you have had anything done.

Does Labiaplasty interfere with later childbirth?

No. However, the tissues can stretch and need a touch up.

What are the options for the hood?

During the labiaplasty, an extension can be made to remove some of the hood from the sides. This flattens it. However, sometimes there is so much clitoral hood that a cut needs to be made at the top to hitch up the tissues and shorten the length.

What about the posterior fouchet (Area between Vagina and Anus)?

About 10% of women have webbing at the back of the vaginal opening. This needs to be identified before surgery, otherwise it can cause rubbing later.

How small can I go?

The wedge technique allows it to be reduced as much as possible, but not expose the clitoris.

What about clitoral hood exposure?

Some ladies have low lying clitorises. This means there is a limitation on how much clitoral hood is removed. Exposing the clitoris means that it rubs on clothing and is painful. There is an optimum level of clitoral hood reduction so as not to expose the clitoris. Lifting the clitoris is a dangerous procedure that can damage the nerves to the clitoris.

Will there be a colour difference?

Sometimes the front part of the labia is pink and the back part is grey or brown. Initially, there may be a slight colour difference, however with friction on clothing, the colours tend to blend together.

A labiaplasty is performed when the patient wants it. Remember, we are  all different and we are all beautiful.

Plastic surgery before and after photos

Due to the respect and privacy of our patients, we do not publish before and after photos on our website. However, many of our patients have graciously allowed their photos to be viewed by new patients considering the procedure. These photos are available to be viewed during the detailed consultation with Dr Hadi.

How can I prepare for Labiaplasty surgery?
You will need to see Dr Hadi twice. The first consult takes you through the operation as well as expected results. The second consult is at no extra cost to you and runs through things again. All risks and benefits will be discussed with you and treatment will be tailored to your needs and your body shape. When you decide to proceed, there are a few things you can do to prepare. Stop smoking as this significantly increases complications rates. You cannot smoke for 6 weeks prior and 6 weeks after surgery.

  1. Two weeks prior to surgery, stop all anticoagulant and antiplatelet medication unless previously discussed with Dr Hadi. Please stop any over the counter medications that might thin the blood, a comprehensive list will be provided prior to the procedure.
  2. Please check any over the counter medications to see whether they contain these ingredients.
  3. Shower the night before or the morning of surgery with anti-bacterial soap. This will reduce the bacteria living on the skin and there is evidence it will reduce the chance of infection.
How long will the Labiaplasty operation take ?
You will need to be fasted at least six hour prior to your Labiaplasty surgery. The operation usually takes 2 hours with a recovery time of around two weeks. You will need to avoid heavy exercise for around one month.

The operation is performed under general anaesthetic or local anaesthetic depending on your preference. Patients go home the same day.

You will be given antibiotic tablets and pain relief tablets to take home so that you can be comfortable. You will be given Dr Hadi’s number to contact her if you have any concerns or questions post operatively.

What about the sutures?
Your wound is closed in layers with dissolvable sutures. You will need to wear a pad for around a week to absorb any excess ooze.
Going to the toilet after Labiaplasty
Wash the area with water, pat dry and apply vasaline.
Showering after Labiaplasty
You can shower from the next day, pat dry and then apply Vaseline.
When to drive after Labiaplasty?
You can drive as soon as it is comfortable to do so. This is generally a minimum of one week.
When can I resume sexual activity post Labiaplasty Operation?
Allow six weeks so that the sutures are not disrupted.
What about scar management?
Apply vasaline to the area as often as needed. Generally three times a day.
What can you do after surgery?
Your part in the operation is essential. You can help achieve the best possible outcome by:

  • Ensure you have clean pads that can be used to soak up any ooze.
  • Apply ice covered in a tea towel over the area that day and the next morning after surgery to reduce swelling.
  • Keeping the area clean and apply vasaline.
  • Take tablet antibiotics as prescribed to avoid infection
  • Do not smoke for at least 6 weeks after surgery
  • Avoid sexual activity for 6 weeks after surgery.
  • Come back for regular review as detailed in the next section to ensure your healing is progressing at each stage.
What about post operative visits?
As a minimum, you will be seen by Dr Hadi after surgery, the next day, at three months and twelve months after surgery. This is so that you can have the best possible outcome.
